Application Requirements

API students participate in several excursions per session designed to help familiarize them with areas of their host city, country, and surrounding region. The following is a listing of all excursions for API Granada programs. All excursions are subject to change.

Students participating in the fall semester will have an international excursion to Paris. Students participating in the spring will have an international excursion to Rome.

    The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial was constructed between 1563-1584 and built in the purest 16th century Renaissance style. Nearly all Bourbon kings and queens of Spain have been buried here. It is a royal palace, a monastery, school and houses the private library of Philip II which contains some of the oldest books in the world.

  • Las Alpujarras

    This region of mountain villages lies on the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada mountains (Europe’s second highest mountain range after the Alps) with breathtaking valleys and gorges that run down towards the Mediterranean coast. The villages of Capileira, Bubión, and Pampaneira, located at the Poqueira ravine, have a unique whitewashed North African style. The area allows the traveler to experience the natural beauty while hiking the many trails that connect the different villages.

    Spain’s capital blends the modern with an important cultural and artistic heritage. Three of the most important art galleries in the world (the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums) are all located in the center of Madrid. What You’ll Study

TOTAL CREDITS - 12-20 credits per semester (17-20 for Early Start; 12-15 for Regular Start)

Designed for students who wish to study abroad in Granada to acquire a deeper knowledge of Spanish language and culture, the Hispanic Studies program allows students to take an advanced Spanish language course along with several elective courses in Spanish. Students must have completed a least one 300 level class. Upon arrival, students take a language placement test to verify that they are ready for classes at the high advanced or superior levels (European Framework levels B2.2, C1 and C2 respectively). Students testing below the high advanced level are transferred to the Language and Culture program and can choose from the courses listed for that program. Academic Year students who do not place high enough for the Hispanic Studies Program during the fall semester may switch to the Spanish Language and Culture Program for the fall and then move into the Hispanic Studies Program for the spring semester. Elective courses are conducted at an upper-division (300-400) level.

Semester credit hours earned vary based on the number of courses taken and passed. Students complete 4 or 5 classes per semester. Additional courses can be taken for an extra fee. Fall early start, spring, and year early start students have the option of taking 1-2 courses with Spaniards.

Students completing and passing the required courses for the entire academic year can opt to receive a Diploma de Estudios Hispánicos.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

The Internship Program for Foreign Students (PPEE) is designed for university students and professionals interested in broadening their studies through professional internships across a wide range of institutions. These internships consist of field work, a group seminar, individual interviews with an internship tutor, and a written project and presentation at the end of the term. 45 contact hours (approximately 3 U.S. credits) of internship credit are included, though students can take up to 120 contact hours of internship credit for an additional fee of $500.

EARLY START OPTIONS FOR FALL AND ACADEMIC YEAR STUDENTS

Students who want to refresh their Spanish skills before starting their classes can participate in the fall and academic year early start programs, which include an intensive month of study in September for an additional 80 contact hours of Spanish language instruction.

Students in this program are required to take one Spanish language course from the three options available. They may then choose to take an internship (for credit) with a local company, an educational institution, an NGO or volunteer organization, or a public health organization. They may also choose 3-4 elective courses from the remaining course list.

CREDIT INFORMATION

Most API partner universities in Spain operate on the contact hour system, wherein the number of credits earned depends on the time spent in class. To determine the conversion of contact hours to U.S. credits, divide the contact hours available by 15.

NOTE: The courses in this program are conducted at an upper-division (300-400) level; students wishing to enroll must have high-advanced Spanish proficiency. Internships are considered as elective courses.

Arte español (Renacimiento – Barroco) (Spanish Art (Renaissance and Baroque)

This subject deals with the study of the forms of artistic expression in Spain between the 16th and the end of the 18th centuries, in two differentiated blocks; Renaissance Art and Baroque Art. The analysis of these two blocks explains the main lines of artistic expression of the period and their evolution, giving attention – for reasons of brevity – to the principal figures of each epoch.

The specific aims of the course are, on the one hand, to understand the essential trends of Spanish artistic expression of the Modern Age, integrating them in their historical, social, and ideological context; and on the other hand, to develop the linguistic competence of the student in the Spanish language.

Arte español contemporáneo (Contemporary Spanish Art)

The aims of this course are:

  • To get to know and understand critically the process of contemporary Spanish art’s historic evolution.
  • To identify and characterize each one of the artistic styles in the history of Spanish art during this period.
  • To highlight the study of the principle Spanish artists and their role in contemporary art.
  • Relate each of the periods and artistic styles with the political, social, economic and cultural aspects occurring in Spain during the Contemporary Age.
  • Evaluate artistic expression as one of the essential expressions for the understanding of Spanish history and culture.
  • Acquire a basic knowledge of artistic vocabulary in Spanish.

Cambios ideológicos y sociales a través del teatro español (Social and Ideological Change through the Lens of Spanish Theatre)

This course provides an overview of the main ideological and social changes taking the theatrical approach to the Spanish stage as a reference. An introduction to the most outstanding Spanish authors and plays and comparison with the European scene.

Ciencias de la Salud y Salud pública en España (Health Sciences and Public Health in Spain)

This course provides students with a greater knowledge of the Spanish Health system and medicine in Spain. Among other topics, students study the Spanish sanitary system, the future role of Spanish medicine, cancer, infectious diseases, the economic development, public health and new therapies of the 21st century. The course includes practical field work and visits that complement the theoretical components studies.

Civilización y Cultura Españolas (Spanish Civilization and Culture)

This course aims to study and explain the concepts considered to be the basis of Spanish culture. Cultural aspects of different fields are covered and interrelated, whenever possible. Civilización y Cultura Hispanoamericanas (Latin American Civilization and Culture)

The fundamental objective of the course is to understand the complex reality of peoples who are the result of a laborious process of acculturation. This course aims to explain and study in depth the principles considered the foundation of Latin American culture, analyzing issues that are now models to understand the contemporary reality of Latin America. Cultural aspects of different fields are covered and interrelated through explanations, articles, and media resources.

Comunicación de Marketing (Marketing Communications)

This subject attempts to provide the student with a complete and integrated vision of the different forms of business communication presently available. In this sense, it brings to light both the difficulties and the wealth of communication possibilities that can be developed. Students will understand the marketing communication process and is able to learn the different communication tools business have at their disposal, and the need to coordinate and integrate them appropriately to synergistic benefits. Students will learn the logical and appropriate sequence of decision making in a company’s communication planning process. Each student will be able to plan business communication in a specific market situation.

Cultura Islámica en España (Islamic Culture in Spain)

The main objective of this subject is to give the students an overall view of the Arab-Islamic world through its history and culture. The program is divided into five chapters that include Arab-Islamic history from its beginning to the present time, rendering special attention to the Islam as a fundamentally religious and cultural phenomenon in Arab history, as well as to the socio-political development of al-Andalus.

De la España del XVIII a la Guerra Civil y Franco (Spanish History from the 1700s to the Civil War and Franco)

This course offers a panoramic vision of the history of Spain during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, emphasizing the processes of confirmation of the modern State and its material bases, as well as the relationship with Europe and America, although international relations occupy a secondary place. Along with an introductory class and an initial topic relative to the Catholic Kings, the class is divided into two large chronological sections, dedicated respectively to Spain of the Austrias (16th-17th centuries) and to Spain of the 18th century. In each section, classes are ordered in the scheme of historiography: population, economy, society, political structure, development of events (by reigns), and finally, religion and culture. The student should be familiar with the main historical processes of Modern Spain, as with the specific vocabulary of historical science.

Diversidad religiosa y cultural en la España medieval (Religious Diversity in Spain)

The Jewish population of Spain is made of up over 40,000 people, who did not begin grouping themselves into communities until the late 19th century. However, Jews inhabited the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, both under Christian or Muslim rule, and this legacy is part of the Spanish cultural heritage. This course aims to help students acquire a better knowledge and understanding of Spanish history and culture through the study of social, religious and cultural interactions as evidenced in medieval Hispanic multicultural societies. Learning more about these phenomena provides hints to understanding contemporary Spain. The course presents a journey through the history of the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the fortunes of the Jews who took the Spanish language and culture with them when they marched into exile. It also discusses the Jewish communities in Spain and the contemporary political and cultural relations that Spain maintains with Israel.

Ecología y Medioambiente en España (Ecology and the Environment in Spain)

This course provides students with a greater knowledge of the environment in Spain. Environmental topics include conservation and degradation and natural resource management from a socio-environmental perspective. The course includes practical field work and visits that complement the theoretical components studies.

This course is intended for those who wish to learn about the language of economics in general as well as the specific content of the economy of Spain and the main Latin American countries through a wide range of class activities. El arte del Flamenco en la Sociedad y la Cultura (The Art of Flamenco in Society & Culture)

Through the study of a significant number of songs, as well as articles, books, films and documentaries, this course will explore the poetic language of the lyrics, the association of these with high culture (principally poetry and music), the artistic nature of this musical expression and the links between flamenco and the society and culture that are its origin and end.

Students will be guided from the analysis of this art and its diverse substrate to the acquisition of an advanced understanding of its anthropological, historical, socio-cultural and linguistic aspects. Students will review the history of Spain and Andalusia and will study the literary quality of the body of anonymous lyrics. The class will encourage debate and moral reflection about such concepts as exclusion, persecution, migration, and racism, as well as about the feelings of pain, disgrace, humiliation and social shame. Finally, students will consider values intimately tied to the flamenco universe, such as brotherhood, liberty, and resistance.

España e Hispanoamérica a través del cine contemporáneo (Spain and Latin America through Contemporary Cinema)

This course approaches the contemporary historical development of these countries. It will cover Spanish history from the Post-war period (the 50s), an overview of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century. It will also cover Latin American history from the Populist movements of the 50s to the migratory movements of the late 20th century, and include a reflection on the first decade of the 21st century.

The aim of this course is to enable students to cope in the Spanish business world. The text used guides students through the diverse stages and processes inherent to the creation and setting-up of a business: product design, personnel selection, the definition of distribution lines and merchandising strategies, advertising lines, etc. The course is designed for students who, whether they have had previous contact with business Spanish or not, have the oral and written understanding capacity to enable them to analyze and understand the texts. Following a task-based approach, students will acquire the necessary lexical, grammatical and notional-functional knowledge.

The content of the course includes the main points of those remaining difficulties that a student may encounter in the latter part of an advanced learning phase and the best way to solve them, within a pragmatic tone. Students wishing to enroll in this course must have the required level of Spanish, active knowledge as well as passive, and certain knowledge of Spanish grammar. The student is offered a definitive consolidation of this knowledge by means of a systematic presentation of the grammar along with numerous exercises. Historia Contemporánea de América (Contemporary History of America)

This course studies the historical development of the Latin American countries from independence until the present day. The course examines the most relevant aspects of their nationalities: the formation of the State, the evolution of politics, the social classes, the economic areas, as the burning issues of the demographic boom, external debt, and issues with the indigenous population.

Internships in Educational Institutions (Programa de Prácticas en Centros Educativos)

The Internship Program in Educational Centres is designed for university students and professionals interested in broadening their studies through professional internships in a wide range of educational centers. Student participation in the Internship Program in educational centers has a double objective: to learn how the Spanish educational institution works, benefiting from interaction with the teaching teams and the center’s pupils, and the centers benefit from the collaboration and involvement of these interns in the classes taught in the corresponding foreign language.

Internship in Local Companies

API students participating in the Suffolk University Madrid program have the opportunity to participate in a credit-bearing internship to complement their academic studies. Placements are available in a variety of fields, including global business, communications and journalism, economics, government, history, management, marketing, philosophy (applied ethics), psychology, sociology, theater, science, and women’s and gender studies. Students must have a high level of Spanish language proficiency (minimum 5 semesters), as all placements are in Spanish businesses/organizations. The deadlines for the internships are earlier than the regular academic program, so students are encouraged to apply early. These internships are offered for an additional fee. La diversidad del español en el mundo (The Diversity of Spanish in the World)

The goal of this course is to acquaint the foreign student with the peculiarities of the different dialects, sociolects, and registers which constitute the Spanish language. Through both historical and contemporary perspectives, the class describes the principal tendencies and linguistic phenomena in the different varieties of the language. This course pays special attention to those linguistic modalities which have a greater presence and generalization in contemporary society, especially those that are used in the socio-cultural environment in which students move. The program covers the following topics: Spanish vs. Castillian; geographic, social, and stylistic varieties of the Spanish language; historical varieties of Spanish; Spanish and other peninsular languages; characteristics of spoken Spanish in Galicia, the Basque country and Catalan speaking areas; expansion of Castillian: present-day varieties of Spanish; southern ways of speaking: from the Canary Islands, Murcia, Extremadura and Andalucía; American Spanish: history and development; conditioning factors in semantic changes. euphemisms and taboo words in present-day Spanish; formal and informal modality; colloquial Spanish; adaptation; expressive strategies and resources; conversation: rules; expressions to show turns and attitudes of the speakers; discursive cohesion: main resources; connectors: types and practical application.

La imagen de la mujer en la literatura española (S. XVIII-S.XXI) (The Image of Women in Spanish Literature (18th-21st Century))

This course approaches the study of Spanish literature from a radical point of departure through the analysis of images of women as represented in texts by authors of both genders. Different configurations of femininity are explored, including those intended to consolidate bourgeois Spanish patriarchal society, and the possible influence of the authors’ gender on the construction of the feminine collective image. Themes covered include: basic considerations of literary texts and images of women (sex/gender, subject/object); the creation of a model “angelic” woman during the Age of Enlightenment, and the triumph of the “ángel del hogar” in poetry, romantic fiction, and press of the period; important realist authors and the advent of the woman as subject; the Generation of ‘98 to the Generation of ‘27 and new concepts of femininity; images of women in the postwar era and challenges to stereotypes; and the emancipation of women through new narrative voices at the end of the century.

La transición: de la dictadura de Franco a la democracia de la España actual (The Transition: from Franco’s Dictatorship to the Democracy of Today’s Spain)

This class provides students with an overview of the political, economic, and social transformations experienced in Spain during the years from the Civil War until the present day. Special attention is paid to the different roles the State adopted during the Franco regime and its later transformation to a democratic parliamentary model. Students study the significance of the reality of Franco’s dictatorship in context and connection to the Western European framework, and the process of international integration of capitalist democracies. Emphasis is placed on the transformation and evolution of the culture and morality imposed under the dictatorship, and the changes over the years through a relationship with other Western European countries.

The first period discussed is dedicated to the particulars of the Enlightenment in Spain and its co-existence with a type of Baroque literature. The second period to be studied in the literature of the 19th century, and its two principal genres, Romanticism and Realism. This orientation provides students with a dynamic vision of Spanish literature, as well as help connect students’ prior and future studies and knowledge.

Vision ideológica y social en el cine europeo contemporáneo (Social and Ideological Perspective of Contemporary European Films )

El cine constituye la manifestación artística más popular del siglo XX. Su fuerza expresiva y su capacidad narrativa lo han convertido en el medio más importante para conmover la sensibilidad del espectador moderno. Esta asignatura pretende ser un acercamiento a la sociedad europea a través del cine contemporáneo europeo con una visión de los cambios sociales, económicos e ideológicos tomando como referencia los principales directores y películas que hablen de estos temas. This subject attempts to provide the student with a complete and integrated vision of the different forms of business communication presently available. The goal of this course is to acquaint the foreign student with the peculiarities of the different dialects, sociolects, and registers which constitute the Spanish language. Through both historical and contemporary perspectives, the class describes the principal tendencies and linguistic phenomena in the different varieties of the language. This course pays special attention to those linguistic modalities which have a greater presence and generalization in contemporary society, especially those that are used in the socio-cultural environment in which students move. The program covers the following topics: Spanish vs. Castillian; geographic, social, and stylistic varieties of the Spanish language; historical varieties of Spanish; Spanish and other peninsular languages; characteristics of spoken Spanish in Galicia, the Basque country and Catalan speaking areas; expansion of Castillian: present-day varieties of Spanish; southern ways of speaking: from the Canary Islands, Murcia, Extremadura and Andalucía; American Spanish: history and development; conditioning factors in semantic changes. euphemisms and taboo words in present-day Spanish; formal and informal modality; colloquial Spanish; adaptation; expressive strategies and resources; conversation: rules; expressions to show turns and attitudes of the speakers; discursive cohesion: main resources; connectors: types and practical application.

This subject deals with the study of the forms of artistic expression in Spain between the 16th and the end of the 18th centuries, in two differentiated blocks; Renaissance Art and Baroque Art. The analysis of these two blocks explains the main lines of artistic expression of the period and their evolution, giving attention – for reasons of brevity – to the principal figures of each epoch.

De la España del XVIII a la Guerra Civil y Franco (Spanish History from the 1700s to the Civil War and Franco)

This course offers a panoramic vision of the history of Spain during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, emphasizing the processes of confirmation of the modern State and its material bases, as well as the relationship with Europe and America, although international relations occupy a secondary place. Along with an introductory class and an initial topic relative to the Catholic Kings, the class is divided into two large chronological sections, dedicated respectively to Spain of the Austrias (16th-17th centuries) and to Spain of the 18th century. In each section, classes are ordered in the scheme of historiography: population, economy, society, political structure, development of events (by reigns), and finally, religion and culture. The student should be familiar with the main historical processes of Modern Spain, as with the specific vocabulary of historical science.

Diversidad religiosa y cultural en la España medieval (Religious Diversity in Spain)

The Jewish population of Spain is made of up over 40,000 people, who did not begin grouping themselves into communities until the late 19th century. However, Jews inhabited the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, both under Christian or Muslim rule, and this legacy is part of the Spanish cultural heritage. This course aims to help students acquire a better knowledge and understanding of Spanish history and culture through the study of social, religious and cultural interactions as evidenced in medieval Hispanic multicultural societies. Learning more about these phenomena provides hints to understanding contemporary Spain. The course presents a journey through the history of the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the fortunes of the Jews who took the Spanish language and culture with them when they marched into exile. It also discusses the Jewish communities in Spain and the contemporary political and cultural relations that Spain maintains with Israel.

Film was the most popular artistic manifestation of the 20th century. Due to the expressive and narrative nature of film, the modern audience is moved by film more than any other art form. La imagen de la mujer en la literatura española (S. XVIII-S.XXI) (The Image of Women in Spanish Literature (18th-21st Century))

This course approaches the study of Spanish literature from a radical point of departure through the analysis of images of women as represented in texts by authors of both genders. Different configurations of femininity are explored, including those intended to consolidate bourgeois Spanish patriarchal society, and the possible influence of the authors’ gender on the construction of the feminine collective image. Themes covered include: basic considerations of literary texts and images of women (sex/gender, subject/object); the creation of a model “angelic” woman during the Age of Enlightenment, and the triumph of the “ángel del hogar” in poetry, romantic fiction, and press of the period; important realist authors and the advent of the woman as subject; the Generation of ‘98 to the Generation of ‘27 and new concepts of femininity; images of women in the postwar era and challenges to stereotypes; and the emancipation of women through new narrative voices at the end of the century.

Special attention is paid to the different roles the State adopted during the Franco regime and its later transformation to a democratic parliamentary model. Students study the significance of the reality of Franco’s dictatorship in context and connection to the Western European framework, and the process of international integration of capitalist democracies. Emphasis is placed on the transformation and evolution of the culture and morality imposed under the dictatorship, and the changes over the years through a relationship with other Western European countries.

De la España del XVIII a la Guerra Civil y Franco (Spanish History from the 1700s to the Civil War and Franco)

This course offers a panoramic vision of the history of Spain during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, emphasizing the processes of confirmation of the modern State and its material bases, as well as the relationship with Europe and America, although international relations occupy a secondary place. Along with an introductory class and an initial topic relative to the Catholic Kings, the class is divided into two large chronological sections, dedicated respectively to Spain of the Austrias (16th-17th centuries) and to Spain of the 18th century. In each section, classes are ordered in the scheme of historiography: population, economy, society, political structure, development of events (by reigns), and finally, religion and culture. The student should be familiar with the main historical processes of Modern Spain, as with the specific vocabulary of historical science.

Diversidad religiosa y cultural en la España medieval (Religious Diversity in Spain)

The Jewish population of Spain is made of up over 40,000 people, who did not begin grouping themselves into communities until the late 19th century. However, Jews inhabited the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, both under Christian or Muslim rule, and this legacy is part of the Spanish cultural heritage. This course aims to help students acquire a better knowledge and understanding of Spanish history and culture through the study of social, religious and cultural interactions as evidenced in medieval Hispanic multicultural societies. Learning more about these phenomena provides hints to understanding contemporary Spain. The course presents a journey through the history of the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the fortunes of the Jews who took the Spanish language and culture with them when they marched into exile. It also discusses the Jewish communities in Spain and the contemporary political and cultural relations that Spain maintains with Israel.

El arte del Flamenco en la Sociedad y la Cultura (The Art of Flamenco in Society & Culture)

Through the study of a significant number of songs, as well as articles, books, films and documentaries, this course will explore the poetic language of the lyrics, the association of these with high culture (principally poetry and music), the artistic nature of this musical expression and the links between flamenco and the society and culture that are its origin and end.

Students will be guided from the analysis of this art and its diverse substrate to the acquisition of an advanced understanding of its anthropological, historical, socio-cultural and linguistic aspects. Students will review the history of Spain and Andalusia and will study the literary quality of the body of anonymous lyrics. The class will encourage debate and moral reflection about such concepts as exclusion, persecution, migration, and racism, as well as about the feelings of pain, disgrace, humiliation and social shame. Finally, students will consider values intimately tied to the flamenco universe, such as brotherhood, liberty, and resistance.

La imagen de la mujer en la literatura española (S. XVIII-S.XXI) (The Image of Women in Spanish Literature (18th-21st Century))

This course approaches the study of Spanish literature from a radical point of departure through the analysis of images of women as represented in texts by authors of both genders. Different configurations of femininity are explored, including those intended to consolidate bourgeois Spanish patriarchal society, and the possible influence of the authors’ gender on the construction of the feminine collective image. Themes covered include: basic considerations of literary texts and images of women (sex/gender, subject/object); the creation of a model “angelic” woman during the Age of Enlightenment, and the triumph of the “ángel del hogar” in poetry, romantic fiction, and press of the period; important realist authors and the advent of the woman as subject; the Generation of ‘98 to the Generation of ‘27 and new concepts of femininity; images of women in the postwar era and challenges to stereotypes; and the emancipation of women through new narrative voices at the end of the century.

This subject deals with the study of the forms of artistic expression in Spain between the 16th and the end of the 18th centuries, in two differentiated blocks; Renaissance Art and Baroque Art. The analysis of these two blocks explains the main lines of artistic expression of the period and their evolution, giving attention – for reasons of brevity – to the principal figures of each epoch.

The specific aims of the course are, on the one hand, to understand the essential trends of Spanish artistic expression of the Modern Age, integrating them in their historical, social, and ideological context; and on the other hand, to develop the linguistic competence of the student in the Spanish language.

De la España del XVIII a la Guerra Civil y Franco (Spanish History from the 1700s to the Civil War and Franco)

This course offers a panoramic vision of the history of Spain during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, emphasizing the processes of confirmation of the modern State and its material bases, as well as the relationship with Europe and America, although international relations occupy a secondary place. Along with an introductory class and an initial topic relative to the Catholic Kings, the class is divided into two large chronological sections, dedicated respectively to Spain of the Austrias (16th-17th centuries) and to Spain of the 18th century. In each section, classes are ordered in the scheme of historiography: population, economy, society, political structure, development of events (by reigns), and finally, religion and culture. The student should be familiar with the main historical processes of Modern Spain, as with the specific vocabulary of historical science.

Diversidad religiosa y cultural en la España medieval (Religious Diversity in Spain)

The Jewish population of Spain is made of up over 40,000 people, who did not begin grouping themselves into communities until the late 19th century. However, Jews inhabited the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, both under Christian or Muslim rule, and this legacy is part of the Spanish cultural heritage. This course aims to help students acquire a better knowledge and understanding of Spanish history and culture through the study of social, religious and cultural interactions as evidenced in medieval Hispanic multicultural societies. Learning more about these phenomena provides hints to understanding contemporary Spain. The course presents a journey through the history of the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the fortunes of the Jews who took the Spanish language and culture with them when they marched into exile. It also discusses the Jewish communities in Spain and the contemporary political and cultural relations that Spain maintains with Israel.

Film was the most popular artistic manifestation of the 20th century. Due to the expressive and narrative nature of film, the modern audience is moved by film more than any other art form. La diversidad del español en el mundo (The Diversity of Spanish in the World)

The goal of this course is to acquaint the foreign student with the peculiarities of the different dialects, sociolects, and registers which constitute the Spanish language. Through both historical and contemporary perspectives, the class describes the principal tendencies and linguistic phenomena in the different varieties of the language. This course pays special attention to those linguistic modalities which have a greater presence and generalization in contemporary society, especially those that are used in the socio-cultural environment in which students move. La imagen de la mujer en la literatura española (S. XVIII-S.XXI) (The Image of Women in Spanish Literature (18th-21st Century))

This course approaches the study of Spanish literature from a radical point of departure through the analysis of images of women as represented in texts by authors of both genders. Different configurations of femininity are explored, including those intended to consolidate bourgeois Spanish patriarchal society, and the possible influence of the authors’ gender on the construction of the feminine collective image. Themes covered include: basic considerations of literary texts and images of women (sex/gender, subject/object); the creation of a model “angelic” woman during the Age of Enlightenment, and the triumph of the “ángel del hogar” in poetry, romantic fiction, and press of the period; important realist authors and the advent of the woman as subject; the Generation of ‘98 to the Generation of ‘27 and new concepts of femininity; images of women in the postwar era and challenges to stereotypes; and the emancipation of women through new narrative voices at the end of the century.

This class provides students with an overview of the political, economic, and social transformations experienced in Spain during the years from the Civil War until the present day. Special attention is paid to the different roles the State adopted during the Franco regime and its later transformation to a democratic parliamentary model. Students study the significance of the reality of Franco’s dictatorship in context and connection to the Western European framework, and the process of international integration of capitalist democracies. Emphasis is placed on the transformation and evolution of the culture and morality imposed under the dictatorship, and the changes over the years through a relationship with other Western European countries.

A second objective is for students to develop the skills for translation process by means of the analysis and practice of aspects relative to the use of documentation, translation strategies, the tools and resources for the translator, pragmatic and textual considerations, among others.

This subject attempts to provide the student with a complete and integrated vision of the different forms of business communication presently available. In this sense, it brings to light both the difficulties and the wealth of communication possibilities that can be developed. Arte español (Renacimiento – Barroco) (Spanish Art (Renaissance and Baroque)

This subject deals with the study of the forms of artistic expression in Spain between the 16th and the end of the 18th centuries, in two differentiated blocks; Renaissance Art and Baroque Art. The analysis of these two blocks explains the main lines of artistic expression of the period and their evolution, giving attention – for reasons of brevity – to the principal figures of each epoch.

The specific aims of the course are, on the one hand, to understand the essential trends of Spanish artistic expression of the Modern Age, integrating them in their historical, social, and ideological context; and on the other hand, to develop the linguistic competence of the student in the Spanish language.

The fundamental objective of the course is to understand the complex reality of peoples who are the result of a laborious process of acculturation. De la España del XVIII a la Guerra Civil y Franco (Spanish History from the 1700s to the Civil War and Franco)

This course offers a panoramic vision of the history of Spain during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, emphasizing the processes of confirmation of the modern State and its material bases, as well as the relationship with Europe and America, although international relations occupy a secondary place. Along with an introductory class and an initial topic relative to the Catholic Kings, the class is divided into two large chronological sections, dedicated respectively to Spain of the Austrias (16th-17th centuries) and to Spain of the 18th century. In each section, classes are ordered in the scheme of historiography: population, economy, society, political structure, development of events (by reigns), and finally, religion and culture. The student should be familiar with the main historical processes of Modern Spain, as with the specific vocabulary of historical science.

Diversidad religiosa y cultural en la España medieval (Religious Diversity in Spain)

The Jewish population of Spain is made of up over 40,000 people, who did not begin grouping themselves into communities until the late 19th century. However, Jews inhabited the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, both under Christian or Muslim rule, and this legacy is part of the Spanish cultural heritage. This course aims to help students acquire a better knowledge and understanding of Spanish history and culture through the study of social, religious and cultural interactions as evidenced in medieval Hispanic multicultural societies. Learning more about these phenomena provides hints to understanding contemporary Spain. The course presents a journey through the history of the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the fortunes of the Jews who took the Spanish language and culture with them when they marched into exile. It also discusses the Jewish communities in Spain and the contemporary political and cultural relations that Spain maintains with Israel.

El arte del Flamenco en la Sociedad y la Cultura (The Art of Flamenco in Society & Culture)

Through the study of a significant number of songs, as well as articles, books, films and documentaries, this course will explore the poetic language of the lyrics, the association of these with high culture (principally poetry and music), the artistic nature of this musical expression and the links between flamenco and the society and culture that are its origin and end.

Students will be guided from the analysis of this art and its diverse substrate to the acquisition of an advanced understanding of its anthropological, historical, socio-cultural and linguistic aspects. Students will review the history of Spain and Andalusia and will study the literary quality of the body of anonymous lyrics. The class will encourage debate and moral reflection about such concepts as exclusion, persecution, migration, and racism, as well as about the feelings of pain, disgrace, humiliation and social shame. Finally, students will consider values intimately tied to the flamenco universe, such as brotherhood, liberty, and resistance.

This course approaches the contemporary historical development of these countries. It will also cover Latin American history from the Populist movements of the 50s to the migratory movements of the late 20th century, and include a reflection on the first decade of the 21st century.

Film was the most popular artistic manifestation of the 20th century. Due to the expressive and narrative nature of film, the modern audience is moved by film more than any other art form. This course studies the reality of 20th century Spain by analyzing film productions, from an aesthetic and historical perspective (from the beginning of film-making to modern film). Emphasis is placed on several aspects: objective reality, analytical attitude, ideology, and creativity.

The goal of this course is to acquaint the foreign student with the peculiarities of the different dialects, sociolects, and registers which constitute the Spanish language. Through both historical and contemporary perspectives, the class describes the principal tendencies and linguistic phenomena in the different varieties of the language. This course pays special attention to those linguistic modalities which have a greater presence and generalization in contemporary society, especially those that are used in the socio-cultural environment in which students move. La imagen de la mujer en la literatura española (S. XVIII-S.XXI) (The Image of Women in Spanish Literature (18th-21st Century))

This course approaches the study of Spanish literature from a radical point of departure through the analysis of images of women as represented in texts by authors of both genders. Different configurations of femininity are explored, including those intended to consolidate bourgeois Spanish patriarchal society, and the possible influence of the authors’ gender on the construction of the feminine collective image. Themes covered include: basic considerations of literary texts and images of women (sex/gender, subject/object); the creation of a model “angelic” woman during the Age of Enlightenment, and the triumph of the “ángel del hogar” in poetry, romantic fiction, and press of the period; important realist authors and the advent of the woman as subject; the Generation of ‘98 to the Generation of ‘27 and new concepts of femininity; images of women in the postwar era and challenges to stereotypes; and the emancipation of women through new narrative voices at the end of the century.

This class provides students with an overview of the political, economic, and social transformations experienced in Spain during the years from the Civil War until the present day. Special attention is paid to the different roles the State adopted during the Franco regime and its later transformation to a democratic parliamentary model. Students study the significance of the reality of Franco’s dictatorship in context and connection to the Western European framework, and the process of international integration of capitalist democracies. Emphasis is placed on the transformation and evolution of the culture and morality imposed under the dictatorship, and the changes over the years through a relationship with other Western European countries.

Producción e interacción oral en español (Oral Production and Interaction Skills in Spanish)

El estudiante de nivel B se denomina "usuario independiente" de la lengua, lo cual implica que es capaz de actuar lingüísticamente como agente social en transacciones de la vida diaria, en interacciones sociales y con diferentes tipos de textos con un nivel de autonomía suficiente para poder llevar a cabo la mayoría de tareas que implican el uso de la lengua en un país de lengua hispana.

The informative content and they type of texts on the course will be related to different, real situations of communication, attempting to include different registers for the language, textual typologies and a balance between oral and written expression, always within the areas of information of a general topic.

A second objective is for students to develop the skills for translation process by means of the analysis and practice of aspects relative to the use of documentation, translation strategies, the tools and resources for the translator, pragmatic and textual considerations, among others.

This course introduces students to the fundamental themes of linguistics as a science. The complex and fascinating system of human language is studied as a continually evolving means of social communication. Themes covered include: verbal and nonverbal communication; functions of language; linguistic signs (structure and characteristics); language as a system (phonological, morphosyntactic, and lexical levels); varieties of language (geographical, social, and functional); diversity of languages (linguistic families and criteria of classification); linguistic typology; prejudices and commonly held beliefs about languages; and the evolution and methods of linguistics.

The aim of this course is to enable students to cope in the Spanish business world. The text used guides students through the diverse stages and processes inherent to the creation and setting-up of a business: product design, personnel selection, the definition of distribution lines and merchandising strategies, advertising lines, etc. The course is designed for students who, whether they have had previous contact with business Spanish or not, have the oral and written understanding capacity to enable them to analyze and understand the texts. Introducción a la lengua árabe/Introduction to the Arab language

Este curso de introducción a la lengua árabe tiene como objetivo ofrecer al alumnado una visión general de esta lengua, sobre la que los alumnos podrán aprender, por una parte, aspectos lingüísticos como su origen y evolución, su diversidad geográfica, características del árabe clásico y árabe moderno; y por otra parte, aspectos de índole instrumental de la lengua como el alfabeto y la caligrafía, y un conocimiento básico de la lengua para comunicarse.

Arte español (Renacimiento – Barroco) (Spanish Art (Renaissance and Baroque)

This subject deals with the study of the forms of artistic expression in Spain between the 16th and the end of the 18th centuries, in two differentiated blocks; Renaissance Art and Baroque Art. The analysis of these two blocks explains the main lines of artistic expression of the period and their evolution, giving attention – for reasons of brevity – to the principal figures of each epoch.

The specific aims of the course are, on the one hand, to understand the essential trends of Spanish artistic expression of the Modern Age, integrating them in their historical, social, and ideological context; and on the other hand, to develop the linguistic competence of the student in the Spanish language.

The aims of this course are:

De la España del XVIII a la Guerra Civil y Franco (Spanish History from the 1700s to the Civil War and Franco)

This course offers a panoramic vision of the history of Spain during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, emphasizing the processes of confirmation of the modern State and its material bases, as well as the relationship with Europe and America, although international relations occupy a secondary place. Along with an introductory class and an initial topic relative to the Catholic Kings, the class is divided into two large chronological sections, dedicated respectively to Spain of the Austrias (16th-17th centuries) and to Spain of the 18th century. In each section, classes are ordered in the scheme of historiography: population, economy, society, political structure, development of events (by reigns), and finally, religion and culture. The student should be familiar with the main historical processes of Modern Spain, as with the specific vocabulary of historical science.

Diversidad religiosa y cultural en la España medieval (Religious Diversity in Spain)

The Jewish population of Spain is made of up over 40,000 people, who did not begin grouping themselves into communities until the late 19th century. However, Jews inhabited the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, both under Christian or Muslim rule, and this legacy is part of the Spanish cultural heritage. This course aims to help students acquire a better knowledge and understanding of Spanish history and culture through the study of social, religious and cultural interactions as evidenced in medieval Hispanic multicultural societies. Learning more about these phenomena provides hints to understanding contemporary Spain. The course presents a journey through the history of the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the fortunes of the Jews who took the Spanish language and culture with them when they marched into exile. It also discusses the Jewish communities in Spain and the contemporary political and cultural relations that Spain maintains with Israel.

El arte del Flamenco en la Sociedad y la Cultura (The Art of Flamenco in Society & Culture)

Through the study of a significant number of songs, as well as articles, books, films and documentaries, this course will explore the poetic language of the lyrics, the association of these with high culture (principally poetry and music), the artistic nature of this musical expression and the links between flamenco and the society and culture that are its origin and end.

Students will be guided from the analysis of this art and its diverse substrate to the acquisition of an advanced understanding of its anthropological, historical, socio-cultural and linguistic aspects. Students will review the history of Spain and Andalusia and will study the literary quality of the body of anonymous lyrics. The class will encourage debate and moral reflection about such concepts as exclusion, persecution, migration, and racism, as well as about the feelings of pain, disgrace, humiliation and social shame. Finally, students will consider values intimately tied to the flamenco universe, such as brotherhood, liberty, and resistance.

This course approaches the contemporary historical development of these countries. It will also cover Latin American history from the Populist movements of the 50s to the migratory movements of the late 20th century, and include a reflection on the first decade of the 21st century.

La imagen de la mujer en la literatura española (S. XVIII-S.XXI) (The Image of Women in Spanish Literature (18th-21st Century))

This course approaches the study of Spanish literature from a radical point of departure through the analysis of images of women as represented in texts by authors of both genders. Different configurations of femininity are explored, including those intended to consolidate bourgeois Spanish patriarchal society, and the possible influence of the authors’ gender on the construction of the feminine collective image. Themes covered include: basic considerations of literary texts and images of women (sex/gender, subject/object); the creation of a model “angelic” woman during the Age of Enlightenment, and the triumph of the “ángel del hogar” in poetry, romantic fiction, and press of the period; important realist authors and the advent of the woman as subject; the Generation of ‘98 to the Generation of ‘27 and new concepts of femininity; images of women in the postwar era and challenges to stereotypes; and the emancipation of women through new narrative voices at the end of the century.

La transición: de la dictadura de Franco a la democracia de la España actual (The Transition: from Franco’s Dictatorship to the Democracy of Today’s Spain)

This class provides students with an overview of the political, economic, and social transformations experienced in Spain during the years from the Civil War until the present day. Special attention is paid to the different roles the State adopted during the Franco regime and its later transformation to a democratic parliamentary model. Students study the significance of the reality of Franco’s dictatorship in context and connection to the Western European framework, and the process of international integration of capitalist democracies. Emphasis is placed on the transformation and evolution of the culture and morality imposed under the dictatorship, and the changes over the years through a relationship with other Western European countries.

Vision ideológica y social en el cine europeo contemporáneo (Social and Ideological Perspective of Contemporary European Films )

El cine constituye la manifestación artística más popular del siglo XX. Su fuerza expresiva y su capacidad narrativa lo han convertido en el medio más importante para conmover la sensibilidad del espectador moderno. Esta asignatura pretende ser un acercamiento a la sociedad europea a través del cine contemporáneo europeo con una visión de los cambios sociales, económicos e ideológicos tomando como referencia los principales directores y películas que hablen de estos temas. El contenido será una parte breve teórica con una introducción histórica e ideológica, además de los diferentes movimientos surgidos a lo largo del cine europeo contemporáneo. Para cada tema se hará una selección de películas que se analizarán en clase, además de fragmentos de películas que sean representativas para cada bloque que se trate. Se ofrecerá habrá un dosier con tareas para cada película que se vea y todo lo relacionado con sus contenidos.

API students in Granada may choose to live with a host family, Residencia, or in a shared apartment with other students. Internet access is available in all three options. Participants who will be under age 18 for any portion of their session abroad are required to live in supervised housing with a host family and must adhere to a curfew set by API while still a minor.

Students who choose to live with families typically share a double room with a fellow API student and are provided with three meals per day, laundry, and cleaning service. Families provide an amazing opportunity to experience Spanish culture firsthand. Host families serve as a unique introduction into Spanish culture and may be made up of a married couple with children, a divorced or widowed woman, some of them with children still at home, or a family with some members living at home and others living outside the home. Students can opt for a single room for an additional fee.

Students who choose the shared apartment option generally live with other students. Shared apartments may be made up of API students, local and/or international students. Students benefit from having meals, laundry, and cleaning provided by the Spanish owner. Three meals per day are also provided with this option. On Sundays and during holidays, meals may not be served. Shared apartments may be run by dorms or families. In some cases, a family member may share the apartment. Some families spend a great deal of time with the students, while others may not join the students for meals or other activities.

Residencias offer students the opportunity to live with local Spanish, international students, and other API program participants. Residencias are not like American “dorms”, but rather, they are arranged more like traditional boarding houses. Students may share a room and a common bathroom. Everyone has access to the common living and TV areas, and internet access. Three meals/day are included in a common dining hall (at specified dining times), laundry service or facilities are available and regular cleaning provided. Mealtimes are set according to each residencia, and the meal schedule will be posted upon arrival. On Sundays and during holidays meals may not be served but students may use a small kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, microwave oven, etc. Most of the Residencias are co-ed.
