Study Abroad + Options
Complete a virtual internship with an international organization to differentiate your resume, earn essential skills that employers value, and grow your professional network with the API Virtual Internship program. Full-time internships will require a commitment of 32 hours a week; part-time internship placements will require a commitment of 20 hours per week.
API’s virtual internship programming will support your internship success as you engage in activities designed to refine specific skills, orient you to the international workplace culture, guide you through virtual cultural webinars and local visits, and display your learning in a digital badge that you can add to your LinkedIn profile, e-portfolio, personal websites, digital resumes and more.
*Prices start at $1200. Some locations or placements may require an additional fee. Flexible dates based on your availability may also be possible, depending on the availability of the host organization abroad.
**Participants on 8-week internships who wish to earn academic credit through Nichols College will incur an additional fee (for 6 credits - Summer $600 or Fall $750). Part-time placements also offer 3 credits for an additional fee. Academic credit through Nichols College is not available for 6-week internship sessions.
Program participants will have the opportunity to culminate their virtual learning experience with an optional 7-16 day excursion in January or March 2021! Students will experience the rich cultural heritage of the country of their choice through various tours, visits to historic sites, and opportunities to experience the local culture firsthand. Students interested in this option may select one excursion and will be charged an additional fee. Please note that the international excursions require minimum enrollment per location and itineraries are subject to change.

The week will include guided tours of each city, including Barcelona’s famous Barrio de Grácia neighborhood and a bicycle excursion through central Madrid. Students will also participate in activities designed specifically to expose students to local culture and history, to include language exchanges with local Spaniards and visits to local organizations, including a Spanish ham company – the best ham in the world! In addition, students will dive into the local culture with a flamenco show, rumba workshop, cooking class, and more. Several group meals are included throughout the week to connect and reflect on each day, and of course the week would not be complete without some churros & chocolate!

March dates: March 22-30, 2021
The week will include a guided tour of central London, including Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, and a flight on the London Eye. Students will also participate in activities designed specifically to expose students to local culture and history, such as a trip to the Bank of England museum, a tour of British Parliament, as well as the opportunity to participate in a guest lecture on the LSE campus! In addition, students will dive into the local culture with tours of Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral, a West End Theatre show, and more. The week also includes a day trip to Paris by train for students to explore the City of Lights! Several group meals are included throughout the week to connect and reflect on each day, and of course the week would not be complete without some fish & chips!
January dates: January 3-11, 2021
The week will include guided tours of each city, including Rome’s famous Trastevere neighborhood, the Gucci Garden in Florence, and St. Mark's Square in Venice. Students will also participate in activities designed specifically to expose them to local culture and history, ranging from museums and art galleries, a wine tasting event, an Italian cooking class, a glass blowing demonstration on the Venetian island of Murano, and more. Several group meals are included throughout the week to connect and reflect on each day, and of course the week would not be complete without some pizza and gelato!
January dates: January 3-11, 2021March dates: March 22-30, 2021
The week will include various visits and activities around Sydney, including the iconic Sydney Opera House, an opportunity to climb Sydney Harbour Bridge, and a visit to the famous Manly Beach. Students will also participate in activities designed specifically to expose students to local culture and indigenous history, to include a visit to an interactive local wildlife park to see some of the country’s native kangaroos and koalas as well as a trip to the Australian Outback to visit Uluru (Ayers Rock), an UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition, students will spend a day exploring the brilliantly colorful corals and vibrant tropical fish on The Great Barrier Reef!
*Students traveling to Australia will have the option to also join the international excursion to New Zealand for an additional fee and a total of 16-days abroad.
Tentative dates: January 5-13, 2021 (Participants leave the U.S. on Jan 3rd)
The week will include a guided tour of the diverse neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, including colorful La Boca and its famous Caminito, San Telmo and Montserrat, Retiro and Recoleta. Students will also participate in activities designed specifically to expose students to local culture and history, to include a visit to Palacio Barolo, lunch at one of the city’s historic bares notables, and a visit to the nearby city of Tigre for a Mate tasting - Argentina’s national drink! In addition, students will dive into the local culture with a tango class, cooking class, a tour of the famous Colón theater, and more. The week also includes a visit to Mendoza, Argentina, known around the world for its viticulture. This two-night stay will include visits to local wineries as well as horseback riding and rafting in the Andes Mountains! Several group meals are included throughout the week to connect and reflect on each day.

The week will include a guided tour of Auckland, including a visit to the famous black sand beaches along New Zealand’s west coast. Students will also travel to Rotorua, known for its geothermal activity and Maori culture, to participate in activities designed specifically to expose students to local culture and indigenous history. Activities include guided tours of Hobbiton and the Waitamo Glowworm Caves, a Redwoods Treewalk, as well as a Te Puia Maori performance and Hangi dinner! In addition, students will visit Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of the World! In Queenstown, students will experience the Shotover Canyons on a jet boat ride and explore the famous glacier-formed valleys and beautiful waterfalls of Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park.

API’s Virtual Global Internship Program will provide you the opportunity to intentionally grow the skills that employers value in a global context, in a remote setting from home.
You will differentiate your resume by working closely with an organization based abroad, navigating challenges and embracing the opportunities that arise from working across cultures to make a meaningful impact on your host organization. You will be a part of API’s virtual intern community, sharing your experience in real-time with API’s network of interns completing internships across the world. As a result, you will also earn a digital badge credential that you can display on LinkedIn that certifies your successful skill development and connects you to job openings and employers that seek your specific skill set. And you will do it all while navigating a variety of digital technologies- another top skill for employers!

STEM majors can find it more challenging to study abroad. However, a STEM internship can provide a great alternative allowing you to gain valuable practical hands-on experience and cultural immersion at the same time. STEM grads can benefit by having international experience in this global economy. Added bonus—STEM students also have access to a number of scholarship opportunities not available to other majors as well! Example intern duties might include monitoring, research, data collection, website development, data analysis or teaching.

Our internship program is comprehensive and includes all of the key services and support to enhance your experience. Students applying for STEM-related placements are very likely to be placed in a research-based internship. Research placements are strong opportunities to learn about cutting-edge technologies before they are put into commercial practice, and are also ideal for boosting graduate school applications.
All STEM placements must be a minimum of 8 weeks, and in some cases may need to be longer.
Note that many employers will only accept interns who demonstrate at least two years of completed university-level coursework (sophomore status or higher) and a 3.0 GPA.
Make a difference during your virtual internship experience with a non-governmental organization (NGO) working to support communities, solve global issues, or work with marginalized communities and populations while gaining valuable career skills at the same time. Example intern duties might include advocating for social justice issues, assisting with community development, educating on healthcare access, planning and facilitating fundraising events, and administration.
Have a passion for sports? There are sports related internship opportunities to meet a wide variety of majors that will offer a high-quality learning experience abroad. Imagine interning with a soccer or rugby league, helping plan a sporting event, assist with corporate ticket sales, or gain experience in sports journalism writing for a local newspaper. Those are just a few of the areas that are feasible for an internship in this area. Example intern duties might include developing a marketing strategy, ticket sales, training athletes, promotional activities, event planning and management, writing, editing, coaching, and administration.
Create international style and skill to your portfolio through an art or design internship abroad. It will also be a unique chance to learn what inspires other designers and artists abroad in a wide variety of placement options in galleries, studios, museums, theaters, and schools. Example intern duties might include event planning, designing products, curating shows, installation, creating event signage and promotions, performing, sewing, budgeting, textile use, and administration.
Accounting and finance internships abroad are a great way to gain valuable work experience in an international setting and are available in all of our destinations. There is a wide range of opportunities working with companies and organization of all sizes. Example intern duties might include accounting, accounts receivable/payable, financial analysis, auditing, tax preparation, financial reporting, administrative, and research.
In a world where borders are increasingly fluid, it is imperative that business leaders of the future recognize how to navigate global challenges through cultural understanding, market knowledge, and cross-cultural communication skills. Because many companies have international operations or clients overseas, global skills and experience are often a prerequisite. Real world international work experience can also open up employment opportunities in a competitive job market. Example intern duties might include administration, developing a marketing strategy, creating proposals, budgeting, analyzing data, client relationship management, research, and presentations.
Those seeking careers in advertising, communications, and journalism are well suited for global work experience. Many advertising companies work with global clients and journalism often is international in scope. Having a global perspective in these fields is an asset, so stand out with an international internship experience! Example intern duties might include client relationships, copywriting, editing, writing, creative, event management, social media management, website content development, branding, press releases, filming, and communication strategy.
