Note: Volunteer activities are not limited to those listed below. Placements are customized to meet both community needs and your goals, skills/background. As such, you and your Program Manager will work together to find a placement right for you and the community.

Volunteer - Elderly Support

Positively impact the day-to-day lives of elderly, by offering emotional support for residents of an assisted living facility, while working closely with the therapist of the center. Activities include: listening to their stories, playing board games, accompaniment for walks, participating in activities for physical movement

Volunteer - Day Care Support

Costa Rican public schools have varied schedules, which can be difficult for working parents. This center provides a place for children to thrive while their parents are working during the day. Volunteer activities include painting, feeding children, play games, or additional developmental tasks depending on the skills/background for the volunteer.

Volunteer - Sustainable Farming

Share the passion and enthusiasm for agro-ecology with the owners of a privately-owned farm. Not only will you contribute to spreading awareness of sustainable farming to the community; you will also absorb the tremendous amounts of knowledge the farmers impart. This project is for anyone interested in organic farming, sustainability, nature, being outdoors, conservation and protection of natural resources, through sustainable agricultural practices and implementation of integrated ecological systems. Tasks include: Building; Farming; Support with guided tours; Animal care (chicken and a cow); Maintaining and harvesting crops; Maintaining the medical garden; Selling produce at local markets

Faculty

Participants in San José live with local host families. Host families serve as a unique introduction into Costa Rican culture and may be a married couple with children, a divorced or widowed woman with or without children still at home, or a family with some members living at home and others living outside of the city during the work week. Participants may be housed with other API or international students, and in all cases will have an individual room. Participants are provided with two meals per day, as well as laundry service once per week.

Our host partners work with API to individualize start dates throughout the year, for this reason, applications are accepted on a rolling basis. We recommend you apply at least 8 weeks before your program start to have sufficient time to get your placement and make your plans. Specified dates are group enrollment dates. Please contact your Program Coordinator to customize a start date.

Prices below are for the 2-week program. Each additional week incurs a $400 per week charge. Sustainable farm projects incur an additional $145 for the first 2 weeks, and then $50 for each week thereafter.
