Today’s blog post comes to us from University of North Texas student & #APIabroad blogger Steven Chavez! He’s enrolled in API’s Medical Spanish Immersion Summer Program at Universidad de Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Through Instagram, he’s giving us a behind the scenes look at each day in his study abroad experience.
What a day! Woke up to a beautiful view of the Andes, then after arriving safely, I met my wonderful group of fellow study abroad students.
We toured the city and ate “lomito” and drank “Choppe”. Finally, we ended the day with an orientation dinner to learn more about what our program and Buenos Aires is all about.
Day Two: Entre Buenos Aires
The day started early, with an interesting and far from boring history tour of the “Plaza de Mayo” in central BA.
We then toured the most beautiful cathedral in all of Argentina before making our way toward “El Caminito”, which leads directly to the bay of the Atlantic Ocean.
Finally, after a long day of walking and touring, we met our host families and moved into housing. The touring is now over and I am ready to immerse myself in this culture and start my classes.
Day 3: Finalmente un dia para descansar
Sundays in Argentina consist of staying in and relaxing. I took it as an opportunity to capture some images of the incredible street art in Buenos Aires and later watch the partido de fùtbol con Argentina y Qatar. It was a day full of culture, adjustment, and bliss.
Day 4: First day of school
Well, the fun is over and now it’s time to get back on that grind. My mornings will start at the Hospital Británico where I’ll shadow medical professionals, then I’ll have a break for lunch and eat somewhere like “The Fox” where I ate today.
After lunch, my fellow medical students and I headed to the Universidad del Belgrano to begin our course of intensive Medical Spanish. I also rode the “Subte” on my commute home and explored a little more of the Barrio where I am staying.
Day 5: Dr. Chávez will see you now????????????
Today I officially began my hospital rotations. Every week I will shadow a doctor in a different speciality, this week is orthopedics. After a long day of shadowing and class, I got to Tango with my API family at “La Viruta”.
