Global Launch and

First-Year Experiences

At API, students are at the center of every decision we make. We believe first-year international experiences should be intentionally designed for students in transition, not adapted from traditional study abroad models. Our programs combine immersive global learning with high-touch support, academic alignment, and developmentally appropriate program design to help students successfully navigate both the transition to college and life abroad. For first semester first-year programs, which we call Global Launch, the requirements are even higher.

Why First-Year

Global Learning

Matters

The first year of college is one of the most transformative periods in a student’s academic journey, while also being one of the most critical for belonging, confidence-building, persistence, and long-term success.
Experiential learning has been shown to improve student engagement, persistence, graduation rates, and career readiness. First-year students benefit most when these experiences are intentionally scaffolded with holistic support, structured reflection, and strong community-building.

Our approach is grounded in established theories of experiential learning, transformational learning, reflective practice, and student development.

In partnership with colleges and universities, API develops customized first-year global experiences that align with institutional priorities, student development goals, academic outcomes, and retention strategies. From cohort-based semester programs to short-term faculty-led experiences, we help institutions create programs that foster student growth, strengthen engagement, and build globally minded campus communities.

Commitment to access and belonging
First-year study abroad should do more than replicate traditional models in a different setting. It should be intentionally designed to help students thrive academically, socially, culturally, and personally from the very beginning of their college journey. This philosophy guides every first-year program we build.
