High school students and recent high school graduates have the unique opportunity to complete a virtual internship with a local business or NGO in Latin America or the South Pacific (Australia and New Zealand) to gain first-hand, real-world experience in exploring different industries. This is a unique opportunity to not only learn about a particular company, but to also learn about a field and industry as well as the cultural aspects of working with a company in a different country.
Full-time internships will require a commitment of 32 hours a week; part-time internship placements will require a commitment of 20 hours per week.
API’s virtual internship programming will support your internship success as you engage in activities designed to refine specific skills, orient you to the international workplace culture, guide you through virtual cultural webinars and local visits, and display your learning in a digital badge that you can add to your LinkedIn profile, e-portfolio, personal websites, digital resumes and more!

Make a difference during your virtual internship experience with a non-governmental organization (NGO) working to support communities, solve global issues, or work with marginalized communities and populations while gaining valuable career skills at the same time. Example intern duties might include advocating for social justice issues, assisting with community development, educating on healthcare access, planning and facilitating fundraising events, and administration.
In a world where borders are increasingly fluid, it is imperative that business leaders of the future recognize how to navigate global challenges through cultural understanding, market knowledge, and cross-cultural communication skills. Because many companies have international operations or clients overseas, global skills and experience are often a prerequisite. Real world international work experience can also open up employment opportunities in a competitive job market. Example intern duties might include administration, developing a marketing strategy, creating proposals, budgeting, analyzing data, client relationship management, research, and presentations.
Those seeking careers in advertising, communications, and journalism are well suited for global work experience. Many advertising companies work with global clients and journalism often is international in scope. Having a global perspective in these fields is an asset, so stand out with an international internship experience! Example intern duties might include client relationships, copywriting, editing, writing, creative, event management, social media management, website content development, branding, press releases, filming, and communication strategy.
Bringing global awareness and understanding into the classroom can add to the educational experience that you offer future students. That is why more and more teaching students look to complete part of their qualifying practicums abroad through an education internship. There are many international schools abroad that will virtually host interns in their classroom or administrative offices. Example intern duties might include lesson planning, one-on-one tutoring, teaching, meetings, and administrative support to the supervising teacher. Teaching and education related applicants may need to be flexible with destination and program dates as school academic calendars abroad vary greatly by location.
STEM majors can find it more challenging to study abroad. However, a STEM internship can provide a great alternative allowing you to gain valuable practical hands-on experience and cultural immersion at the same time. STEM grads can benefit by having international experience in this global economy. Added bonus—STEM students also have access to a number of scholarship opportunities not available to other majors as well! Example intern duties might include monitoring, research, data collection, website development, data analysis or teaching.

Students applying for STEM-related placements are very likely to be placed in a research-based internship. Research placements are strong opportunities to learn about cutting-edge technologies before they are put into commercial practice, and are also ideal for boosting graduate school applications.
All STEM placements must be a minimum of 8 weeks, and in some cases may need to be longer.
Note that many employers will only accept interns who demonstrate at least two years of completed university-level coursework (sophomore status or higher) and a 3.0 GPA.
Have a passion for sports? There are sports related internship opportunities to meet a wide variety of majors that will offer a high-quality learning experience abroad. Imagine interning with a soccer or rugby league, helping plan a sporting event, assist with corporate ticket sales, or gain experience in sports journalism writing for a local newspaper. Those are just a few of the areas that are feasible for an internship in this area. Example intern duties might include developing a marketing strategy, ticket sales, training athletes, promotional activities, event planning and management, writing, editing, coaching, and administration.
Create international style and skill to your portfolio through an art or design internship abroad. It will also be a unique chance to learn what inspires other designers and artists abroad in a wide variety of placement options in galleries, studios, museums, theaters, and schools. Example intern duties might include event planning, designing products, curating shows, installation, creating event signage and promotions, performing, sewing, budgeting, textile use, and administration.
