Leeds Town Hall 01 Hero

Leeds, the fastest growing (and 3rd largest) city in England, attracts students, travelers, and businesses with its culture, commerce and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Leeds has an international reputation as one of the most desirable cities in England. It is centrally located, allowing for easy travel to London and other British destinations (as well as for exploration of the verdant Yorkshire countryside). Historians have found traces of Leeds’ history as early as 627 A.D. Leeds is known as the “Commercial Capital of the North,” as well as, “Environmental City of the U.K.” (Its economy is among the most diverse in the U.K., and it is one of the “greenest” cities in Europe, with a greenbelt covering over 2/3 of its entire area. Leeds is also famed for its live music venues. Landmark sites that define Leeds are Millenium Square, Leeds City Art Gallery and Leeds City Museum, Leeds Waterfront, and Turk’s Head Yard. The city center and Victoria Quarter offer a wide array of shops and restaurants.

The University of Leeds is located 10 minutes from the city center. With more than 32,000 full-time students (of which over 25,000 are undergraduates), the university is one of the largest and most popular for U.K. students. In addition to English students, the University of Leeds hosts more than 7,000 international students! One of the attractions is the range of courses taught at the university, offering students from almost every field of study an array of stimulating classes. API students at the University of Leeds are surrounded by students who also want to be part of a vibrant, cosmopolitan campus life, in the heart of a city that reflects that spirit. Students are able to participate in sports clubs, social activities, attend music events and nationally-renowned theater performances at one of the biggest and best student unions in the U.K. Study abroad in Leeds with API!

“The program in Leeds is underrated and I hope that more students in the future are able to find this program and share my amazing experience. My study abroad experience was not what I expected - it was so much more amazing than I could have ever imagined. I loved it so much that I decided to extend to the full year after just one month! I would highly recommend the Leeds program for a full year so you have plenty of time to adjust to the British culture and begin to feel a part of it yourself."

Hometown: Leeds, England

International Experience: Alex originally comes from the Big Smoke in London, UK and came to Leeds in 2015 to study at University. He has travelled to many different countries including Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Miami, Vienna, Berlin and Prague to name a few. Coming from a Greek and Cypriot background, Alex has travelled extensively through the Greek islands and has become fascinated by the rich history of Greece as well as some of the best food in the world and of course plenty of sun. He has also done some voluntary work in a backpacker’s hostel in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands for 6 weeks while studying at university and met a variety of people from many different cultures and walks of life, which has led him to become even more interested in working with people from abroad. Finally, during his first year of study at university he was the Events Manager for his halls of residence where he organised and ran different cultural and local events for students from all parts of the world and he learnt how to create memorable experiences which adapted to everyone’s needs. Having lived in the UK his whole life, Alex is very comfortable and knowledgeable in British culture and loves to help others learn more about the wonders and history of this great country as well.

Education: Alex graduated from The University of Leeds with a BA Hons in Music in 2018. He was introduced to many parts of US culture while working as a voluntary Events Manager for over 200 international and 400 UK students at Lupton Residences in Leeds during his first year.

Favorite Place: Thessaloniki, Greece. When East meets West, this city is full of wonders from the old Turkish baths of the Ottoman Empire, to the modern bars and restaurants everywhere you look, to the beautiful beaches of Halkidiki just 45 minutes away, and the ancient castles and markets within the city. Having travelled here many times with his partner, Alex always finds somewhere new to explore in what is known by some as the city of Romance.
