The United Arab Emirates sparks intrigue and curiosity in many young adults. For American students, studying abroad in the UAE may sound enticing as it’s literally on the other side of the world. It’s truly a completely different cultural experience! Sharjah is considered the cultural capital of the UAE. Sharjah is also home to one of API’s most unique programs. Students who enroll at the American University of Sharjah with API live in a beautiful area of the UAE and take a variety classes on Arabic language and culture.
About Sharjah
Sharjah is a beautiful and unique city because it shares its border with ALL other Emirates in the UAE! This is a great destination for students who may feel nervous about studying in a foreign country, because Sharjah is an incredibly safe city. Sharjah is rich in history and has been appearing on maps as early as the 2nd century. It’s safe to say this is one of the oldest cities a student can study abroad in!
American University of Sharjah Programs
The American University of Sharjah is a great campus for STEM and engineering students. Because the university works off a U.S.-based system, accreditation and curriculum are very similar to schools in the US.
Students also have the opportunity to learn more about Arabic language and literature. However, if you’re intimidated by learning a new language, our summer program offers classes taught only in English. The fall/spring semesters feature courses taught in both English and Arabic.
For students wanting to fully immerse themselves or learn Arabic quickly, API also offers a summer Intensive Arabic Language Program. This is for Arabic speakers of all levels and provides a unique opportunity to hone those language skills!
Students in Sharjah will live in dorm-style housing, with Internet access included.

Opportunities with API
Both API and AUS offer excursions and activities for students. Our Fall 2018 group has learned to cook Arabic food, joined soccer teams and the university choir, and more!
When you study abroad in Sharjah with API, you’re getting much more than the typical college semester experience. Your Resident Director will take you on a desert safari, to Dubai and/or Abu Dhabi; there’s even an international excursion to Oman!
