As you contemplate the study abroad program that’s right for you, location may be one of the first things you consider. Hearing the stories of the students who have gone before you is a great way to get to know all the different destinations. Take it from Ethan David, an API Alum who journeyed to Hungary — read on as he shares his experience and explains why studying abroad in Budapest is a fantastic opportunity.
Reasons to Go Abroad to Budapest
Warm and Friendly Atmosphere
Ethan described the people of Budapest as welcoming and friendly, which made the transition to a new country much easier. He mentioned, “Budapest is a great city with breathtaking views, amazing food, and electric nightlife. I feel very much at home.”
Exploring Europe from Budapest
One of the great things about Budapest is you still have access to other more popular destinations. Ethan described his opportunity to travel beyond Budapest to other parts of Europe: “I positioned myself nicely in Europe where I’m able to travel frequently. These travels include Eger, Hungary which is considered a wine country. I also visited Spain, Italy, and Austria. It’s been amazing to travel with friends I made here as well as meet up with other friends in different countries.”
Affordability
For students on a budget, a destination like Budapest is ideal: “Luckily, the cost of living here is much less expensive than that at home in the States. An average meal out to eat here is $6.”
Embracing Football and Food
Ethan noted one of the highlights of studying abroad in Budapest is the country’s enthusiasm for sports such as football and the delicious cuisine. “In Europe, football is their culture. I have been able to go to a couple matches in Hungary and they have been phenomenal. The atmosphere is unlike anything I have ever seen at a sporting event in the United States. The passion the fans, or ultras, have for their club is admirable. I’ve also mentioned, the food is excellent, and there are a ton of different cuisines to choose from. The goulash soup and all different meats have become a fixture in my daily meal schedule. I also love the Greek food in Budapest!”
More to Explore
On his journey so far, Ethan shared, “I have made so many great new friends and have seen extraordinary views. I have had great nights and I have had chill ones. It is all part of the experience I tell myself. Budapest, Hungary is a wonderful city with so much to offer. From the thermal baths to the Fisherman Bastille, there is so much to do and I am looking forward to exploring this place I now call home.”
