Students in this program will participate in a course called “Shanghai Fashion and Creative Urbanism,” conducted in English and led by faculty from The New School in New York for 3 semester credits. Beyond the 3 credit New School course, students attending the program have an option of taking a separate Chinese language and culture component worth 4 semester credits granted by East China Normal University (ECNU) for an additional fee.

The 4-week Shanghai Fashion and Creative Urbanism course introduces historically iconic Shanghai fashion and haipai culture through the lens of modernity, cosmopolitanism, and urbanism. It explores the creative and distinctive Shanghai urban style from its entangled relations to both Chinese tradition and global bourgeois influences. Students will study how rapid urbanism has transformed the city of Shanghai and its fashion and architecture over a century. Students will conduct guided fieldwork in Shanghai’s post-industrial creative spaces and gain new perspectives on issues such as urban typography, fashion design, and creative economy.

The Chinese language course at ECNU is tactically designed to provide complete immersion into the Chinese language, culture, and way of life. The course provides modern learning techniques with interesting Chinese-related subject matter to nurture a stimulating and enjoyable language learning experience. The course focuses on phonetics, listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar appropriate to the student’s level. Students will “learn by doing” through in and out-of class activities such as Chinese cultural lectures, Chinese cooking lessons, Chinese paper cutting, Taiji workshops, and visits in and around Shanghai.

API students in this program will also get the opportunity to tour the Beijing, visiting such treasures as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heave, Olympic Center, and the Silk Market.
