Today’s program spotlight is a great opportunity for students studying sustainability or the environment! What better place to dive in to these two growing fields than beautiful Costa Rica? Nestled ten miles north of San Jose, the Instituto San Joaquín de Flores provides the perfect location for students who want to focus on biology, ecotourism, and more; all while perfecting their Spanish skills!
Sustainability & Environmental Studies Program
This program combines coursework in English focusing on the environment in addition to a Spanish language course. It is open to intermediate, advanced and superior level Spanish speakers. We will help you out with a placement test so you know where you stand! The Sustainability & Environmental Studies program is very unique because a four-week internship is included. Students can choose from five themes for their internship: turtle protection, rehabilitation of wild animals, species cataloging, protected areas conservation, or beach cleaning. Most students will spend this time outside San Joaquín de Flores, interning within natural parks or other areas. During the program, students live with native host families who provide 3 meals per day and laundry service!
Opportunities to Volunteer
Make the very most of your study abroad experience with a volunteer add-on program! These take place a minimum of two weeks before or after the semester. Volunteers work in wildlife conservation, child care, environment/ecology, medical and more! If you’re curious about what a volunteer add-on is like, check out this blog.
Explore more of Latin America
Expect to see much more than just Costa Rica! Included in this program are international excursions. Our API Resident Director will take you to either Nicaragua or Panama during the semester, giving you more opportunity to use your Spanish skills and see the world!
