Earth Day: Green Study Abroad Programs

April 20, 2017

In celebration of Earth Day 2017, we wanted to highlight a few of API’s “green” study abroad programs and initiatives around the world!

Australia – The “land down under” offers many options for environmental study – from the lush, tropical areas of the north, to the more temperate areas to the east and south, to the expansive Outback. Students will find tons of great options at our partner universities in Brisbane/Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Sydney, including courses such as Climate Change and Public Health, Agribusiness Management in a Changing Climate, Bush Environments, and Australian Environmental Futures.

Bhutan – Bhutan is a beautiful country located in the high Himalayas and is know as the home of Gross National Happiness (a key component of which is Environmental Conservation). API students can take courses at our partner university in the capital of Thimphu in Business and the Environment, Sustainable Development, Natural Resources Management, and more. Students also have the opportunity to intern while in Bhutan with an environmentally-focused NGO.

Costa Rica – Costa Rica has devoted over 1/4 of its landmass as protected natural territory!  With API students can take courses in San Joaquin de Flores or San Jose in sustainability and environmental studies topics such as Conservation and Ecotourism, Marine Biology, Tropical Ecology, Forest and Watershed Management, Landscapes and the Environment, Environmental Impact and Social Development, and Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems.

We also recently introduced a service-learning summer program in San Joaquin de Flores that includes the option to work on a sustainable farm in the Costa Rican countryside!

Ecuador – One of the most biologically-diverse countries in world, Ecuador is a perfect location in which to pursue environmental studies. With API you can take courses such as Biological and Environmental Sciences, Conservation Biology, and Tropical Rain Forest Ecology. Other possibilities include a service-learning course, a semester-long research project, or a summer internship program with possible placements in the Department of the Environment in Quito!

Iceland This country receives nearly 100% of its energy from renewable resources (primarily hydro and geothermal power), and is a leader in sustainability research. Our program at Reykjavik University offers courses in Sustainable Development, Environmental Engineering, and Geothermal Energy.

New Zealand – Arguably one of the most beautiful countries in the world (though that could be said of all the countries on this list), API’s partner universities in Auckland, Dunedin, and Wellington each have a plethora of course options for those interested in environmental studies. These include courses such as Antarctica: Unfreezing the Continent,  Aquaculture, Global Marine Systems, Environment and Society, and Population and Community Ecology.

API is also proud to support a long-running carbon-offset matching program, which has helped to fund a number of sustainable projects around the world (read more here).

These programs are all still accepting applications for the fall 2017 and academic year 2017/2018 terms – apply today!
