In addition to our dedicated Intern programs, API also offers students the option to experience teach, volunteer, and intern opportunities while on a semester, academic year, or summer study abroad program. In many cases, students can earn academic credit, though some opportunities are offered without credit. Most of these opportunities are included in the cost of the program, though a few are offered for an additional fee.

  • Buenos Aires - Universidad de Belgrano - SUMMER (3 semester credits; placement opportunities in teaching positions)
  • Buenos Aires - ALL SEMESTER PROGRAMS - SEMESTER (no academic credit; placement opportunities with the Buenos Aires city government; additional fee required)
  • Mendoza - Universidad de Congreso - SEMESTER (3-4 semester credits; placement opportunities include accounting, architecture and design, communications, construction, cultural heritage, environmental management, finance, historical research, hospitality and tourism, journalism, legal, marketing, office/administrative, technology, and wine industry)

Study Abroad + Volunteer Add-On

In addition to our portfolio of study abroad and intern abroad programs, API also offers students the option to extend their experience abroad and complete volunteer service after their coursework ends. Volunteer add-ons can be a great way to deepen your understanding of the host culture and engage further with your host community (if you stay in your same host city), or to experience a new host country and culture with API support (if you elect to volunteer in another location).

We encourage you to consult the links below for site-specific info. For details about how to apply, speak to your API Program Manager or Coordinator. Interested students are encouraged to apply to volunteer before they go abroad to study or once on-site (at least a minimum of 12 weeks prior to their study abroad program's official end date).

  • Cost - Starting at $1,380 (+$425 for each additional week)
  • Duration - minimum 2 weeks
  • Placements - Child care, coaching (surfing), reforestation/environmental education, youth empowerment, social justice, NGO administration, teaching/tutoring
  • Special Requirements - 18+, some placements require intermediate Spanish language ability

Costa Rica

San José (rural placements)
