Study Abroad in Santiago [API Program Spotlight]

October 28, 2019

Santiago, Chile is considered the business capital of Latin America. As both the capital and largest city in Chile, Santiago bustles with activity every day! Founded in 1541 and nestled between the Andes Mountains, Santiago is a great study abroad destination for students interested in business, history or the outdoors. Today we’re diving in to a great program for advanced Spanish speakers at the Universidad Alberto Hurtado!

Multidisciplinary Studies for Advanced Spanish Speakers

This program offers Spanish speakers the chance to take classes alongside Chilean students! Because classes are taught in Spanish, students must have completed 5-6 semesters of college Spanish (or the equivalent). API will help make sure this program is the right fit for you through an oral interview and language placement exam.

Once you’re accepted into the program, the fun part begins: picking your classes! UAH offers courses in economics, business, education, humanities, law, philosophy, psychology and the social sciences. In addition, a course called “Poverty and Development” is offered specifically for international students. It provides students with a theoretical overview of poverty and social justice initiatives. As a requirement of the course, students will volunteer at organizations working with local populations to gain a more profound understanding of vulnerable groups within Chilean society.

Early start option available

Our program at Universidad Alberto Hurtado also offers an early-start program. Students who enroll in this option come to Chile early to complete a month-long intensive Spanish language course before the official program begins. This is a great option for students who want to grow more comfortable with the Spanish language before taking coursework in their second language.

International excursion included in your program cost!

API strives to provide the best possible experience for the most affordable price. This program is a fantastic option for students because it includes an international excursion in your program cost! During the semester, API’s on-site staff will take you to Mendoza, Argentina. Mendoza is a beautiful city nestled in the foothills of the Andes. It’s a bustling area for adventure and wine tourism.

Other excursions included in your program cost: a trip to Valparaíso, Chile’s “Jewel of the Pacific”, plus visits to an Aromatics Farm and Parque Tricao (a native forest that includes the largest aviary in South America).

Live with a host family or with other API students

Choose from two different housing options! Students have the option to live in apartments with other API students or with local host families. Host families serve as a unique introduction to Chilean culture. Students will have a private bedroom and receive two meals per day, as well as laundry service once a week.
