A common misconception about studying abroad is that there aren’t many opportunities for STEM students. But that’s not the case! In fact, it’s now the top field of study for U.S. students who study abroad. Today we’re highlighting some of API’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programs available for students around the world.

25% of US study abroad students are studying STEM

ROME: LdM STEM Program

This program is one of our most popular for STEM students. Classes are taught in English. The Lorenzo de’Medici Italian International Institute provides immersion in the longstanding scientific traditions Italy offers. Students broaden their knowledge in their fields and understand how scientific discoveries have influenced individuals and societies, contributed to historic and artistic developments and shaped our world.

For pre-med, pre-nursing, or pre-health students, an internship option is also available! Most noteworthy, students can work at a hospital in Rome for credit over the semester.

Of course, we know students want to do a lot more than just learn while they’re abroad. They want to travel, too! Our Rome Resident Directors take students to visit beautiful Florence, Pompeii, Tuscany, and more throughout the semester.

EDINBURGH: Direct Enrollment Program

This program is through Heriot-Watt University. It’s one of the top universities in the UK for Chemistry, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Students can choose from a variety of courses including Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science and more.

Scotland boasts a variety of history and beautiful scenery. Students can visit amazing sights like Hadrian’s Wall, Glasgow, Loch Ness and more.

REYKJAVIK: Business, Computer Science & Engineering Program

Classes at Reykjavík University are taught in English and mostly focus on STEM and Engineering. This program is also relatively inexpensive when compared to other study abroad program locations! Because courses are geared toward upperclassmen, students should have a background in the subjects they plan on studying.

For STEM students who love nature, this is a perfect option. Iceland is a nature lover’s paradise! API will take you on trips to the South Coast, Secret Lagoon, and more. Read more about life in Iceland when you study abroad here.

MADRID: STEM, Humanities, Communications Program

The Universidad CEU San Pablo STEM, Humanities, Communications program has a strong reputation in the Sciences, with prestigious Schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture. In addition, it is Spain’s oldest private university with more than 80 years of experience in higher education.

This program also includes an international excursion! Our spring semester students visit the hidden gem of Lisbon, Portugal; meanwhile, our fall semester students visit beautiful Paris.

BILBAO: Engineering & Spanish Program

STEM majors who want an additional Spanish focus can enroll in this program at the Universidad de Deusto. Students take a language placement test when they arrive, because some courses are taught in Spanish. API students also have the unique opportunity to take part in the Deusto Tandem Program. It matches full-time Spanish students with study abroad students. Both students learn more about the other’s language and culture.

Our Bilbao programs provide several international excursions, with trips to London, Paris, and Southern France.
