One of the biggest “study abroad myths” we hear is that there are few options for STEM students. API offers several STEM-specific programs, but today we wanted to focus on one in particular: the LDM Rome STEM Program! Applications for this program are due June 15th.

This program is designed for students with interests in science, technology, engineering and math.

The LdM Rome STEM program offers STEM and related majors a unique educational opportunity: rigorous science courses taught in collaboration with prestigious Italian institutions offering state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories.

At the core of the program is a course on Italy’s contributions to modern sciences, from Galileo Galilei to Guglielmo Marconi. Be prepared to explore the development of scientific thought and its historical connections and to immerse yourself in Italy’s longstanding scientific traditions; The history of science in Italy is as fascinating as the science itself!

Students combine this core course with a selection of varied STEM-area courses: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, and Mathematics. In addition, students may choose general education courses in a variety of fields including art history, business, classical studies, communications, Italian language, literature, philosophy and religious studies, political science and international studies and psychology.

Getting into the health sciences field? This program has an internship option for you!

An internship placement in a hospital is an additional option for pre-med, pre-nursing or pre-health students of sophomore standing or higher. This is a fantastic option to add an internship abroad to your resume and learn more about health care in Italy and around the world. Placements require around 10-12 hours of commitment per week, in addition to the standard load of 12 U.S. credits.

“I conducted my own experiments and saw medical procedures first hand,” says API alumni Alyssa Cangemi, who took part in the program and internship. “I wouldn’t have been able to have either of these experiences if I remained within the states for that semester. All of my courses went better than expected. Even better, each course transferred over as  major requirements. This meant that I would be ahead in credit when I returned home to the states!”

Explore STEM concepts abroad and stay on track for graduation

International experience is vital for STEM students, as these industries often change the entire world! “I often hear that students ‘can’t’ go abroad because they’re STEM majors and they want to graduate on time,” alumni Alyssa Cangemi explains. “This is a misconception that may have been true at one time, but no longer holds any relevance today.”
