We connected with a group of Husson University students from Maine. In addition to their alma mater, they also all share the same study abroad host country! However, they have each chosen a different city within Ireland to call home. We will share interviews with each student over the coming weeks. Up first we have, Alice, a Dublin student!
(API) Where are you from?
(Alice) I was born and raised in a small town, Bethlehem located in New Hampshire. I’m surrounded by beautiful views and loads of hiking.
(API) What are you studying?
(Alice)I am studying Sport Management at Husson University. After graduating with my Bachelors, my plan is to get my Masters in Public Health. My goal is to pursue a marketing career in the Health and Wellness field.
(API) Why did you choose to study abroad in Ireland?
(Alice)My ancestors are from Cork, Ireland. Being able to visit the place where my family was from was important to me. Whenever you talk to people about Ireland there is nothing bad to say besides the fact that they are known for rain. Which isn’t bad, just bring a rain jacket and an umbrella and you’re golden. Everyone told me that they envy my choice. I’m quickly learn why because Ireland truly a lovely country. The people here are so genuine and willing to help out whenever and wherever they can. There is also so much history to be learned here.
(API) How did you choose your city in Ireland?
(Alice) Honestly, I didn’t put much thought into the city itself, I just knew I wanted to be in Ireland. Dublin is the capital of the Republic Ireland and one of the liveliest cities in Europe. It also has one of the youngest populations so I knew that I would be able to fit in. The town seems to bring together so much tradition, yet has a modern spin of Europe. My college is actually right outside of Dublin. It’s a cozy town that is just a quick bus or train ride to the city. I’ve always wanted to know what it was like to be in a city, because I grew up in a small town. Here I have the opportunity to be in the city when I want, but can go back to Maynooth to get away from the hustle and bustle.
(API) What course are you taking that is most interesting to you?
(Alice) Here at Maynooth I am taking elective equivalent classes with one business class mixed in. I am not your average study abroad student that takes three or four classes. I’m enrolled in five classes that require a lot of attention. I had to make a few changes to my schedule when I first arrived at Maynooth due to not liking the class, not offering enough credits, or it not being offering anymore. As of right now my favorite class that I’m taking is called Music and Entrepreneurship. This is 300 level class so unlike my other classes that is with first years, this class is with third years. Our main project, which I thought was hypothetical at first, is to put on an event that intertwines unique musical attributes. All the proceeds of the event go to a charity of our choice. Many of my group members had a personal connection to Mental Health, so we choose Mental Health Ireland as our charity. Along with the event you need to do fundraising. We have chosen to have a bake sale and a paint and sip, where again, all proceeds will benefit MHI. During our main event we are going to have speakers talk about their experience with Mental Health, a representative from MHI talk about their charity, and the Mental Health representative from Maynooth talk about how we can get involved through school to help Mental Health awareness. We also will have comedians and music after the event to ensure that everyone has a grand time. This class requires business skills that many of my group members haven’t learned because they’re studying music. With my business background I am able to help my group tremendously. We are lucky to have a well rounded group.
(API) What excursions did you enjoy the most/ are most looking forward to?
(Alice) All the outings are a blast with Sophie and the rest of the API Dublin crew. All of the students that I’ve met from each college have been so much fun to be around. I’ve been able to make some great friends even though they don’t go to Maynooth with me. It’s nice to have connections in Dublin for whenever I’m there. The excursion I am looking forward to the most is the trip to London. I’ve always wanted to see Big Ben, having construction or not. I’m excited that I get to with API. It’ll be fun getting to see a new part of the world with the people I’ve met through API.
(API) If you had to convince someone to study in (your city) what would you say?
(Alice) If you someone like me who isn’t a big city girl, but wants access to it when you want, Maynooth is for you. There is a homey feel as soon as you arrive in the town. It has a handful of restaurants and cafes to choose from. There is so much to explore even if the town isn’t all that large. It’s also just a short train or bus ride to the heart of Dublin. Dublin itself is a great place to explore. There is definitely something for everyone! It is home to the Guinness Factory for those that are looking for some good beer. You can take a stroll through Phoenix Park. Dublin is the home to many museums, galleries, and theaters. A trip to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is a must. You’ll be blown away by the design inside and out. You can spend days and days exploring every part of Dublin.
