Why Leeds? Courtney’s Story

April 5, 2018

API offers an opportunity to study in the beautiful Leeds, England. We had the chance to chat with program alumni about the picturesque scenery and unique course opportunities to ultimately answer the question; “Why Leeds?” This interview is from Courtney Copp from Emmanuel College.

1. Why did you choose to study abroad in Leeds?

I did not know anything about the city of Leeds when I first started planning where I was going to study abroad. I knew I wanted to use API because I had heard good things about them as a program. Next, I knew I wanted to go to England, but not London because I didn’t want that large of a city. When I was working with my study abroad advisor at Emmanuel she told me, the other city that API offered in England was Leeds. After doing more research, and talking to someone at Emmanuel about her experience there, I decided that is where I wanted to spend my semester abroad.

 2. Describe what it means to be a student at the University of Leeds. Can you share your personal idea of the essence of the city and student life? What were some things you got involved with while studying and living in the city?

The University of Leeds is very much an international school, as well as the city of Leeds. It was very easy to get involved at Leeds University with the various clubs they had as well as what the city had to offer.
Personally, because I was only there for a semester I did not get involved with anything on campus but instead focused on seeing as much of the country as I could. I did try to explore the city and one thing I found was that there is always something going on in the city if you look online or just flyers around the city.

3. What was one thing you wish you knew before you went abroad?

Something I wish I knew before going abroad was how amazing my experience was so I could have stayed the whole year, and live in the moment more. Most of my program decided to extend their semester to a year which made leaving hard.

4. What advice would you give a student considering a study abroad experience in Leeds?
The advice I would give to students studying abroad in Leeds is really taking advance of all the city and the University has to offer. There are so many clubs and events to get involved with on campus that I regret not getting involved in. Also venturing out into the city, and exploring what is happening there. Two things I specifically remember really enjoying was the light show and the Christmas market in the Fall.
