API offers J-Term programs in Chile, France, Italy, Cuba, Portugal, Spain, and the Czech Republic! Whether you’re wanting to master Spanish or French or you’re wanting to visit somewhere brimming with history, API has the perfect J-Term program waiting for you. Let’s dive in to a little more info about each program!

Jan Term in Prague

Our program at Charles University provides students with course options ranging from Czech language to architectural history. Another interesting class you can take: Czechs in the Age of Extremes. Explore two major sources of social conflicts during this timeframe (nationalism & dictatorships) and also engage in debates with your classmates over important themes of modern European history.

Our program in Prague houses API students in university residence halls where breakfast is served during the week. There’s also a laundry room, study room, small gym and some light housekeeping included. You’ll live just a brief 10 minute walk from the iconic Prague Castle. The city’s historic Old Town is just a 20 minute tram ride away!

Jan Term in Florence

API’s January Term in Florence program is open to all levels of Italian speakers. Students can enroll in 1-2 credit-bearing courses on a variety of subjects. Course offerings include The Ancient Roots of Florence, Food & Culture, Principles of Marketing, Italian Food & Culture and more. Italian language classes are also available.

Duomo di Firenze, Florence

Students live in apartments in the historic district of Florence. Most apartments have 1-3 bathrooms as well as a common area, kitchen and a laundry facility. An excursion to beautiful Tuscany is also included in your program cost!

Jan Term in Lisbon

This program offers coursework in international marketing and cross-cultural communications, with classes offered in both English and Portuguese. From Corporate Negotiation to Entrepreneurial Finance to Marketing, this is a great program for Business and Communications majors!

API students in Lisbon live in furnished student apartments with other international students. All accommodations are within a 20-minute commute from the university via public transportation. Most apartments have single rooms, and a shared bathroom, kitchen, and living areas.

Included in your program cost are two amazing excursions to Sintra and Belem. Sintra is home to the best preserved medieval royal palace in Portugal, and Belem is widely considered the city’s most monumental and historic area.

Jan Term in Madrid

This program is a perfect fit for students interested in becoming fluent in Spanish. An intensive four-week Spanish language course is followed by a two-week Spanish culture class.

The best way to become fluent in another language is to fully immerse yourself! This program includes the option to live with a host family, which is an amazing way to learn more about Madrid and the culture of Spaniards. Students can also choose to live in a residencia or an apartment.

Included in your program cost is an excursion to Granada! This city is one of the most enchanting in Spain and is home to new UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the Alhambra and the historical Moorish Albaicín quarter).

Jan Term in Havana

This program offers course options for beginning Spanish speakers all the way up to advanced. Intermediate and advanced-level Spanish speakers may elect to take a course in Cuban cinema. This class gives students a unique insight into Cuban culture and political thought through film.

For advanced and superior-level Spanish speakers, a class entitled “Rhetoric and Composition: The Cuban Experience” is also available (when minimum enrollment is reached). It consists of 60 hours of intensive language instruction and writing activities including cultural seminars for a total of 4 semester credits.

Students live in a residencia with other international students. This is a renovated home run by a host family near the University of Havana campus. Residencias have common spaces where students can work and where API holds group activities. Breakfast and dinner are also provided as part of the program fee.

In addition, your round-trip airfare from Miami to Havana is included in your program cost!

Jan Term in Santiago

Students wishing to study Spanish language and culture intensively at the advanced level are ideally suited to the January Intersession Program. You will take a Spanish Language & Latin American Culture class (taught in Spanish).

Santiago
Santiago!

Santiago is another program location where API students can choose to live with host families! Another option is to live in a local apartment with other API students.

As part of the program, students can take an excursion to Valparaíso, Chile. You’ll quickly discover why this gorgeous city is nicknamed the “Jewel of the Pacific.” A trip to a vineyard for a wine tasting is also included.

Other Short-Term Study Abroad Options

API also offers short-term (anywhere from two to four week) programs in Grenoble, France, Paris, France, and Salamanca, Spain. These programs are perfect fits for students looking to study abroad on a budget, or students who are unable to spend a full semester or month abroad.
